Internet Service Providers (ISPs) usually block sites that violate government regulations. In Indonesia, Kominfo regulates this. In this article, we will explain how to easily access blocked websites.

Background

One day, I was searching for information as usual on Google. It turned out that the information I was looking for was very rarely discussed, and that information was on Reddit, which had been blocked by the Indonesian government.

As a result, I had to use a VPN to access that information. Later, it turned out that Chrome released a feature that could be used to access blocked websites.

Unblocking Websites with DNS

The easiest way to unblock websites is by changing DNS settings. Instead of using the default ISP DNS, we can change it to other DNS providers like Cloudflare, OpenDNS, and Google.

The easiest way is through the browser settings. This setting is available in the latest versions of Chrome, Firefox, and other Chromium-based browsers like Edge, Brave, and Vivaldi.

In the Chrome browser, you can access it through Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Advanced, then enable “Use secure DNS” and use Cloudflare. If you haven’t found these settings, use the search bar and type “DNS.”

Chrome Settings DNS

For Chromium-based browsers like Edge and Brave, it might be slightly different, but you can find these settings using the search bar.

Edge Setting DNS

For the Firefox browser, DNS settings are located on the Settings -> General -> Network Settings page, then check the “Enable DNS over HTTPS” box and select Cloudflare as the provider.

Firefox DNS Setting

On Chrome for smartphones, there is also an option to change DNS, which can be accessed from Settings -> Privacy and Security -> Use Secure DNS. Please check “Use Secure DNS” and select another provider like Cloudflare.

Or you can download the 1.1.1.1 application from Google Play or the App Store and use it to change the DNS on your smartphone so you can open websites blocked by your ISP.

Final Words

This easy way to unblock websites blocked by the government or ISP should not be used for illegal activities such as accessing gambling sites and pornography. Use it wisely, because the method I provide is not intended for such illegal activities.
